Scdoris had her best result in the 2009 Iditarod, taking the Southern route for the first time. Visually guided by Tim Osmar, making his first re-entry into the race since a catastrophic ankle injury incurred while protecting his home from a wildfire in 2007, Scdoris came in 45th, beating her previous best of 57th.
She started the 2005 Iditarod in Anchorage with Paul Ellering as her visual interpreter. He warned her by radio and shouting about trail conditions. During crashes, which are quite common among novices, the two-way radios failed several times. “I had a pleasant little encounter with a tree… The tree won.” Due to signs of sickness in her dogs, she had to abandon the race.
The Iditarod Trail Committee granted her request for accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (90) to allow her to participate in the more difficult and longer Iditarod. Scdoris placed 11th in the 350-mile (563km) Race to the Sky in Montana and 6th at the 400-mile (644km) John Beargrease Mid-Distance Marathon (Minnesota) in 2004.
In the 2006 Iditarod, Rachael Scdoris fell asleep while mushing and became separated from Tim Osmar, her visual guide.
