In March 2020, Cordero contracted COVID-19. His wife, Amanda Kloots, reported that he was in critical condition, on a ventilator, and being treated with dialysis and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. On April 18, 2020, his right leg was amputated as a result of complications from his illness. On April 24, Kloots announced via Instagram that Cordero had received a temporary pacemaker for his heart. On May 1, 2020, his wife reported that he had major lung damage, including “holes in his lungs,” and he had a successful tracheostomy tube placed. CNN reported that Cordero had still not regained consciousness after being taken off of sedation. On May 5, 2020, Cordero’s wife reported he had a “rocky night” and doctors had to take him into surgery, after his oxygen levels fell too low, to perform “a lung scraping to get rid of some more infection”. On May 13, 2020, it was reported that Cordero had regained consciousness.
