His first professional hat-trick was at Rotherham United in March 2008 He scored every goal in the opening half. It also led Morecambe to win 5-1 in a remarkable campaign for the club. It was also the first time Morecambe had scored a to score a hat-trick within the league football. Famous for his lightning speed, Newby began his career with Liverpool and was also involved in the FA Youth Cup win of 1996. Newby played in four games in the Premier League for Liverpool (only two of them played at the Premier League against Middlesbrough) and was loaned by Crewe Alexandra (March 2000), Sheffield United (August 2000) as well as Bury (February 2001).
