US Senator from Illinois who became the Senate Majority Whip, the second highest position in the Democratic Party leadership in the Senate, in 2007. He urged Rod Blagojevich to resign and not name a successor to Barack Obama following Blagojevich’s arrest but the former Governor did not listen to him. He obtained his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1969 before becoming the legal counsel to Lieutenant Governor Paul Simon from 1969 to 1972.
